San Diego Chargers Fantasy Football Analysis – Week 3

Week 3 – @ Minnesota – L 14-31

QB: Rivers blitzed and rushed a ton.  Line was not helping much.  Looked fairly good when he had time and INT wasn’t really his fault.

RB: Gordon an okay game but continues to look impressive when given space.  Has really impressive vision and seems to always fall forward.  Woodhead didn’t do much.  Oliver still looks like a very good back up.

WR: Allen a monster game although second TD came in garbage time.  Just catches everything and baffling that he disappears like he has.  Should be getting a ton of targets every week.  Johnson an average game where most came on one catch.  Floyd was the #2 target in this one and looked good but can’t be trusted.  Too many mouths here.

TE: Green DNP.  Third stringer played.  Enough said.

OL: Did an average job for run game but couldn’t handle blitz.  Pressure was just too much for them.

Def: Couldn’t tackle Peterson.  Got run on for plenty.  Coverage was good but there weren’t many throws and receivers aren’t really elite.  Gave up monster to RB and not much else.

San Diego Chargers Fantasy Football Analysis – Week 2

Week 2 – @ Cincy – L 19-24

QB: Rivers good and really accurate in this one.  Pass rush was getting to him a little too much.  Not his fault.

RB: Gordon is a stud.  Fantastic runner with great vision, patience, and burst.  Solid game in this one.  Woodhead looks great as well.  So quick and finds a crease nearly every carry.  Great PPR game as well.

WR: Allen nearly shutout.  Was blanketed all game and just wasn’t getting separation.  Floyd and Johnson got TDs but Floyd’s was a bit of a blown coverage.  Johnson is looking pretty strong right now.

TE: Green a solid game and certainly has the talent to be a top 10 fantasy TE.  Runs well after the catch and seems to have good hands.

OL: Run blocking was really strong but protection was really shaky.  Got QB hit far too much.  Needs a lot of improvement to help make stars consistent in fantasy.

Def: Pretty ugly.  Couldn’t stop the run at all and got obliterated on the ground.  Was really losing the battle in the trenches.  Got beat by elite WRs as well.  Gave up good games all around.

San Diego Chargers Week 17 Fantasy Analysis

Week 17 – @ KC – L 7-19

QB: Rivers pressured and sacked a ton.  Line just wasn’t able to contain elite pass rush.  Numbers suffered because of it.

RB: Oliver looked great and had good game.  Showed great speed, vision, and patience and doesn’t dance too much.

WR: Inman showed some amazing hands.  Not sure about his other abilities but the hands are crazy good.  Floyd did little and looked a little checked-out.  Royal a good game but probably wouldn’t hold up for a whole season in this role.

TE: Gates a nice game and looked fine.  Doesn’t look as athletic as other TEs but continues to get it done.

OL: Run blocking was really strong considering opponent.  Pass protection was awful.  Got destroyed by elite pass rush.

Def: Helped by bad QB play.  Contained the run but still not elite.  Gave up good game to TE.  Nothing else.

San Diego Chargers Week 16 Fantasy Analysis

Week 16 – @ SF – W 38-35

QB: Rivers a monster game despite some atrocious throws early.  Really played well as the game went on.

RB: Mathews DNP.  Oliver a decent game and looked good again.  Great balance and quickness.  Still looks like he could be a bigger player in this offense if given the touches.

WR: Royal a big game and looks like a nice option with all the injuries.  Wasn’t really covered on his TD (zone).  Floyd a good game also getting a TD.  Inman a nice game and worth keeping an eye on.  Showed great hands.

TE: Gates a huge game and looked great.  Still looks a bit slow but uses his body really well.

OL: Excellent game considering opponent.  Did everything really well and was scary good in this one.

Def: Wasn’t thrown on for much because of deficit most of the game.  Gave up a ton on the ground.  Tackling was terrible.  Gave up huge games to QB and RBs.  Decent game to #1 WR who should have had TD.

San Diego Chargers Week 15 Fantasy Analysis

Week 15 – vs Denver – L 10-22

QB: Rivers very average numbers as he just couldn’t hit a big play down field.  Lots of short stuff around the line or inside of 10 yards.

RB: Matthews DNP.  Oliver an okay game with receiving but shutdown by tough run D.  Runs too violently for his size.  Brown an okay game with receiving as well.  Still not that great.

WR: Allen injured and done.  Floyd couldn’t convert anything long.  Numbers weren’t good because of that.  Royal was fine in space but wasn’t getting enough looks.

TE: Gates a good game getting another TD.  Still looks a little slow and surprised Green never overtook him this season.

OL: Couldn’t open up holes against great run D.  Kept QB clean all game and was great in pass protection, especially considering opponent.

Def: Average game all-around.  Contained the run.  Got beat on some pass plays by elite WR.  Gave up good games to RB and #1 WR.  Held rest in check.

San Diego Chargers Week 14 Fantasy Analysis

Week 14 – vs NE – L 14-23

QB: Rivers a bad game due to break downs in protection on blitzes.  Had guys come unblocked at him far too many times.

RB: Mathews looked good but not enough carries.  Got hurt for a bit but came back.  Will still be good when healthy.  Brown a decent game receiving.

WR:  Allen held to nearly nothing.  Barely looked at.  Floyd a good game with the TD.  Continues to win a jump ball or two nearly every game.

TE: Gates an average game but just didn’t catch a big one.  Was getting the targets, however.

OL: Solid run blocking on limited carries.  Pass protection kept breaking down badly on blitzes.

Def: Run D was strong despite looking shaky early.  Couldn’t stop the stars in the passing game.  No pass rush.  Gave up big games to QB, TE, and #2 WR.

San Diego Chargers Week 13 Fantasy Analysis

Week 13 – @ Baltimore – W 34-33

QB: Rivers a monster game as he made good throws and receivers made great plays.  Was rushed early but line played better as game went on.

RB: Mathews a good game with a good TD run.  Wasn’t getting great blocking.

WR: Allen a monster game and it’s baffling why he wasn’t getting more targets earlier in the season.  Made some incredible plays.  Royal and Floyd both good games with Royal getting a ton of short catches and runs.

TE: Gates another big game but did look a little slower in this one.  Might be wearing down a bit.

OL: Was bad early all-around but turned it around.  Played well later as they were forced to throw a ton.

Def: Continues to be run on fairly easily.  Pass rush not great.  Gave up big games to QB, RB, and #1 WR.  Held others in check.

San Diego Chargers Week 12 Fantasy Analysis

Week 12 – vs St. Louis – W 27-24

QB: Rivers a nice game with a lot of short throws giving his receivers room to make plays after the catch.  Not sure why this offense doesn’t look like this more often.

RB: Mathews looked great and had big game.  Oliver still involved in the passing game and will have some big plays from time to time.  But Mathews looked really good here.

WR: Allen a big game making some great plays after the catch.  Floyd did little.  Royal a nice PPR game.  Floyd will suffer the most in a game where they keep looking short like this.

TE: Gates did little along with Green.  Just didn’t need to throw their way as others were wide open often on the outside.

OL: Strong game against a hot front 7.  Did everything well and surprised with how good they looked.

Def: Helped by struggling QB and a lot of timely penalties.  Okay against the run and solid against the pass.  Gave up good games to RB and #2 & #3 WRs.  Held everything else in check.

San Diego Chargers Week 11 Fantasy Analysis

Week 11 – vs Oakland – W 13-6

QB: Rivers a below-average game.  Pass rush got to him a little.  Wasn’t able to throw to open receivers much of the game.

RB: Mathews returned and looked healthy.  Back to where he was and should be fine for now.  Oliver got plenty of touches but did little.  Blocking wasn’t great for either guy, especially later in the game.

WR: Allen a solid game but still not doing a ton.  Floyd made great TD catch early but did little after that.  Neither is producing as much as they should.

TE: Gates did little.  Passing game just not very good in this one.

OL: Didn’t play as well as they normally do.  Blocking was good early but got worse as game wore on.

Def: Stout game.  Won TOP and gave up little.  Some big plays but no TDs.  Gave up no good games to any player.  Coverage was really good and pass rush was strong against solid O-line.

San Diego Chargers Week 9 Fantasy Analysis

Week 9 – @ Miami – L 0-37

QB: Rivers was awful.  Got good blocking and just made terrible throws.  Missed open receivers all game.

RB: Oliver was stuffed again as blocking was terrible against good D.  Never had a hole to run through at any point.  Brown still clearly worse and added a bad drop in this one.

WR: Floyd and Allen decent games but Rivers’ play hurt bad.  Looked fine and still good options right now.

TE: Gates okay but same story as WRs.  Still looking like the Gates of old.

OL: Awful run blocking.  Better than average pass blocking.  Gave up some sacks but was still better than game indicates.  Bad QB play did everyone in.

Def: Torched through the air by QB to WRs and TE.  Was getting run on as well but numbers were contained surprisingly.  Were tiring out toward the end as TOP was dominated by opposing O.
